About Acting Pal
Acting Pal is an AI scene-partner app for actors that reads the other characters’ lines aloud so you can rehearse, memorise and self-tape without a human reader. You upload a PDF of your sides, mark which character is yours, and assign one of 106 lifelike AI voices to every other role; Acting Pal then runs the scene with you, either answering when it hears you finish a line or leaving a timed gap for you to deliver. It is available on iOS and Android, with a web app coming soon, and is made by Acting Pal Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales.
Who makes Acting Pal
Acting Pal is built by Acting Pal Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales under company number 15944466, with its registered office at Gore Hill House, Haslingbourne Lane, Petworth, England, GU28 0JJ. The company was founded in 2024. Cameron Dejahang is co-founder and CEO and writes most of the articles on the Acting Pal blog.
Acting Pal is a signatory of the Cloud Security Alliance’s AI Trustworthy Pledge. The company does not train AI models on user voices, and neither do the third-party providers it works with.
Which platforms Acting Pal runs on
Acting Pal runs on iOS and Android. Script upload, character selection, the 106 AI reader voices, cue mode, non-stop mode and memorisation mode are available on both platforms. Self-tape recording and the in-built teleprompter are currently available on Android only; an iOS release of the self-taping tool is in development.
A web version of Acting Pal, for rehearsing and self-taping in the browser, is also in development and coming soon. Until it launches, the iOS and Android apps are the way to use Acting Pal.
Scripts you create inside the app are, by default, stored locally on your device. Scripts you do upload are encrypted in transit, and the third-party services Acting Pal uses to process them operate in zero-retention mode.
How cue mode works
Cue mode is Acting Pal’s listening rehearsal mode. Speech recognition follows you through the script as you speak your character’s dialogue, and the moment you reach the end of your line the app plays the next character’s line in the AI voice you assigned to that role — so the scene runs at your pace rather than to a stopwatch, and you can take a beat, stumble, or restart a line without the reader running ahead of you. The alternative is non-stop mode, which replaces each of your lines with a timed break of a length you set, giving you a fixed window to deliver before the next AI line plays. A third mode, memorisation mode, replaces every word of your dialogue with its first letter, a long-established technique for getting off-book.
What Acting Pal costs
Acting Pal costs $9.99 per month, subject to territory, after a 3-day free trial, and can be cancelled at any time directly on your mobile device. The subscription includes up to 60 pages of script uploads a month, all 106 AI reader voices, the option to record or import your own reader audio instead, and — on Android — unlimited self-tapes and the in-built teleprompter.
If a tape needs a human voice rather than an AI one, Acting Pal also runs a free WhatsApp Reader Community where actors read for each other. It is free to join and free to use, with or without a subscription.
