ActingPal FAQ: AI Scene Partner & Self‑Tape App

Acting Pal is an AI scene-partner app for actors, available on iOS and Android, that reads the other characters’ lines aloud so you can rehearse, learn your lines and record a self-tape without a human reader. The answers below cover how it works, what it costs, which features are on which platform, and how your scripts are handled.

Acting Pal is an AI scene-partner app for actors, available on iOS and Android, that reads the other characters’ lines aloud so you can rehearse a scene, learn your lines and record a self-tape without needing a human reader.

Acting Pal works in four steps: upload a PDF of your sides, mark which character is yours, assign one of 106 lifelike AI voices to each of the other roles, then run the scene while the app reads their lines to you. On Android you can record the self-tape at the same time, with the script scrolling in the in-built teleprompter.

Cue mode is Acting Pal’s listening rehearsal mode. Speech recognition follows you through the script as you speak your character’s dialogue, and the moment you reach the end of your line the app plays the next character’s line in the AI voice you assigned to that role. The scene therefore runs at your pace rather than to a fixed timer, so you can take a beat or restart a line without the reader running ahead of you.

Non-stop mode is Acting Pal’s timed rehearsal mode. Instead of listening for you, it replaces each of your lines with a silent break of a length you choose, giving you a set window to deliver before the next AI line plays. The break length is easily adjustable, which makes non-stop mode useful in noisy places where speech recognition is unreliable.

Acting Pal is built for actors working in film, television, theatre and voiceover, at every level of experience — from drama-school students learning a monologue to working actors turning around a self-tape overnight.

Yes. Acting Pal has a memorisation mode that replaces each word of your dialogue with its first letter, a widely used and effective technique for getting off-book, and many actors use Acting Pal primarily as a line-learning app rather than a self-taping one.

You don’t have to use Acting Pal’s AI voices. Acting Pal also lets you record your own reader audio inside the app or import an existing audio file, so a scene can be run entirely with human voices.

Yes. Acting Pal is available on both Android and iOS. It is one of the few apps that can be used to record a self-tape without a scene partner, using either lifelike AI voices or audio you record or import yourself.

Yes. Self-tape recording and the in-built teleprompter in Acting Pal are available on both iOS and Android, alongside script upload, the 106 AI reader voices, cue mode, non-stop mode and memorisation mode.

A web version of Acting Pal, for rehearsing and self-taping in the browser, is in development and coming soon. The iOS and Android apps are available today and are the way to use Acting Pal right now.

If a self-tape needs a human reader rather than an AI voice, Acting Pal runs a free WhatsApp Reader Community where actors around the world read for one another. It is free to join and free to use, with or without an Acting Pal subscription.

Acting Pal costs $9.99 per month, subject to territory, after a 3-day free trial. The subscription includes up to 60 pages of script uploads a month, all 106 AI reader voices, the option to record or import your own reader audio, and — on Android — unlimited self-tapes and the in-built teleprompter.

Yes. An Acting Pal subscription can be cancelled at any time, directly on your mobile device through the App Store or Google Play, and you keep access until the end of the period you have paid for.

Acting Pal offers 106 lifelike AI reader voices spanning 20 accents and a range of genders and ages, and you can assign a different voice to each character in a scene. You can listen to a sample of several of them on the Acting Pal home page before downloading the app.

No system is 100% secure, but Acting Pal takes a number of measures to protect the scripts you upload: they are encrypted in transit, the third-party services used to process them operate in zero-retention mode, and scripts you create inside the app are stored locally on your device by default. Full details are in the Acting Pal Terms and Conditions and in the Security Video in the app’s Settings.
